About Me

I entered professional life, after A Levels, as a trainee Legal Executive. I spent five years in private law practice - specialising in civil litigation - and took the (now Chartered) Institute of Legal Executive examinations, which included gaining a Diploma in Civil Litigation. While I enjoyed many aspects of legal practice, I became increasingly intrigued by the root causes of the societal problems which resulted in people seeking legal advice. Why, for example, was the divorce rate increasing? What caused someone to steal? Who defines what constitutes a crime?

As a result of this questioning, I secured a place at the University of Bristol and obtained a 2:1 Honours Degree in Sociology, with 25% of my degree being in the Philosophy Department. At the end of these three years, I stayed on at the University to read for a Master’s Degree, combining this with a Diploma in Social Work. Following university, I worked as a social worker in the children and families sector, gaining further knowledge and experience of sociology in practice. However, such was my passion for sociology that I decided I wanted to teach social science!

I gained my PGCE in post compulsory education and taught in both a Sixth Form and a Further Education College. This teaching included A Level Sociology, A Level Psychology, A Level Law and  the Access to Higher Education course (social science pathway). In addition, I delivered professional training to social workers and social care professionals.

I continued teaching for a year following the birth of our son, but we had always known that we would home educate him. So, for the last eighteen years, this is what I have been doing! Our son gained nine GCSEs (five an academic year early), all grades 8 & 9 and three A Levels, all with an A grade. He went on to receive five Russell Group university offers and is now firmly ensconced at one of the country's leading universities!

Now that I am no longer needed by one person, I have decided to offer my services to many! I am a passionate social scientist and SHAPE subject advocate. My academic interests include education, knowledge, religion, politics and the criminal justice system. I keep up to date with research, academic papers  and current sociological discourse through my membership of the British Sociological Association. While I am a theorist at heart, I also have a great deal of experience of sociology in practice.

When engaging the services of a tutor, it is vital that you have evidence of their credentials to teach and to deliver the necessary information. My academic qualifications are shown below. My Disclosure and Barring Service check certificate number is, 001115831459.
